What are Ball Bearings?
Ball bearings consist of rolling elements that maintain separation between the inner and outer rings of the component. They're typically made of materials such as steel or ceramic, and a retainer or cage keeps them evenly spaced apart. Using ball bearings reduces friction, allowing for a smooth, high-speed motion for sustaining axial and radial loads. Ball bearings can be developed for different speeds, loads, and applications.
Depending upon the operating needs, ball bearings can be engineered in different designs, sizes, materials, and arrangements to suit various speeds, load capabilities, ecological conditions, and precision levels.
Their versatility, dependability, and cost-effectiveness make ball bearings among the most typically made use of bearing types across modern industries.

Ball Bearing Material
Ball bearings are manufactured from various materials to meet different operating requirements, including chrome steel, stainless steel, and ceramic. Chrome steel is the most common choice due to its high hardness and wear resistance, while stainless steel offers excellent corrosion protection, and ceramic provides superior performance in high-speed and high-temperature applications. To suit specific loads, speeds, and environments, ball bearings can also be designed with multiple bearing rows, cages, flanges, and sealing options.
CHROME STEEL (AISI 52100 OR EQUIVALENT)
Chrome Steel is the standard material used for ball bearing applications where load capacity is the main consideration. The machinability of steel is excellent, giving smooth, low noise raceway finishes, together with superior life. Chrome steel material is recommended in applications where corrosion is not a factor. Chrome steel actually has a low chromium content and is not corrosion resistant. It can tolerate continuous temperatures of up to 120°C. Above the temperature, it undergoes greater dimensional change and the hardness is affected, reducing load capacity.
STAINLESS STEEL (AISI 440C & AISI316)
AISI 440 grade stainless steel is the most commonly used for corrosion resistant ball bearings, because more resistant to corrosion due to the greater chromium content and the addition of nickel. The chromium reacts with oxygen in the air to form a chromium oxide layer, known as the passive film, on the surface of the steel. It is hardened by heat treatment and gives a good combination of strength and corrosion resistance. AISI 316 grade stainless steel bearings are used for greater corrosion resistance to seawater, salt spray and some acids/alkalis.
CERAMIC (FULL CERAMIC & HYBRID BEARINGS)
Ceramic material can be classified into: Silicon Nitride / Si3N4 (prefix “CCSI”); Zirconia / ZrO2 (prefix "CCZR"); Silicon Carbide / SiC (prefix "CCSC"). Compared to steel, the material's lighter weight, higher stiffness, and inert properties facilitate higher operating speeds, extended bearing life, and expanded design possibilities for unique and demanding bearing applications. Silicon nitride is the most popular for the balls in hybrid bearings as it has only 40% of the density of bearing steel but is much harder giving greater wear resistance.

Ball Bearing Types
Selecting the right ball bearing depends on several factors, including operating speed, load requirements, available space, and installation accessibility. Different bearing types are designed to handle specific combinations of radial and axial loads, making proper selection essential for optimal performance and service life.
Deep Groove Ball Bearings
Miniature/instrument ball bearings are often referred to as instrument bearings or micro bearings that reflect their small size. They provide dependable, high performance within small envelope dimensions for moderate thrust and radial load at low operating torque speeds.
Angular Contact Ball Bearings
When an axial load is unidirectional, our single-row angular contact bearings can sustain radial, axial, and combined loads. Designs with small contact angle designs can allow for high-speed operations, while larger contact angles can accommodate higher axial loads.
Miniature Ball Bearings
Miniature/instrument ball bearings are often referred to as instrument bearings or micro bearings that reflect their small size. They provide dependable, high performance within small envelope dimensions for moderate thrust and radial load at low operating torque speeds.
