Food & Beverage Industrial Bearings

Overview

NPBS Bearings is proud to introduce their new and expanded line of full ceramic bearings, ceramic hybrid bearings and specialty lubricants specifically designed for the food processing and food packaging industries. Some of the most pressing issues facing the food manufacturing industry today are controlling costs and food safety. Stainless steel bearings, full ceramic bearings and ceramic hybrid bearings are capable of alleviating some of these concerns. Food safety often dictates high pressure and high temperature wash down conditions to maintain sterilization. Unfortunately traditional steel bearings have an extremely limited life in the presence of moisture and heat. The NPBS Bearing Company understands that production line downtime can be devastating to a company’s bottom line.

Every industry has its own unique characteristics; the Food and Beverage industry is no exception. Food grade bearings and related products are used throughout the manufacturing, processing, and handling of edible products in addition to making end-products for commercial and consumer use.

Some of the challenges in beverage industry bearings include:

  • Dealing with extreme temperatures (both high and low)
  • Contamination
  • Excessive moisture
  • Chemical exposure
  • Continuous washdown

Along with strict regulations and the prospects of shutting down a product line selecting the right product is of the utmost importance.

Bearing Solutions for the Food and Beverage Industry

Using materials that are chemically inert or non-corrosive like Silicon Carbide, Silicon Nitride, Stainless 316 or Thermoplastic will extend the life of the bearings and keep downtime to a minimum. Additionally ceramic balls are also far more efficient than steel balls because the rolling surface is more spherically perfect and therefore friction is reduced. Companies that have converted to ceramic bearings have seen a decrease of energy consumption and have been able to cut cost. The NPBS Bearing Company can also design custom bearings for you utilizing many different specialty materials.
We work with a variety of style and materials to ensure that your parts can withstand the extreme conditions and specific government requirements necessary for food production, including:

  • Silicon Carbide & Silicon Nitride – A special material that is more corrosive resistant, longer lasting than stainless steel bearing material.
  • Stainless Steel – We supply special stainless steel bearings that allow for customer wash down and protection from cleaning agents in food processing plants.
  • 316 Stainless Steel – A special steel material that is more corrosive resistant, longer lasting, and quieter running than regular stainless steel bearing material.
  • Food Grade Greases – Several of our lubricants are specifically used for the food industry including USDA H1 and H2 lubricants. These special bearing lubricants conform to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) CFR Title 21 and have been approved and registered by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) for use in and around food processing areas.

We supplies many customer bearings that are require food grade grease for various types of products such as blenders, ice machines and many different types of food processing machines. Some customers also request special high percentage fill of a moisture barrier grease to help keep out water in their application or caused by intentional washdown by customers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stainless steel bearings offer enhanced resistance to corrosion caused by moisture, cleaning chemicals, and frequent washdowns. This makes them well-suited for food and beverage equipment operating in wet or sanitary environments.
Yes. Bearings used in food and beverage applications are typically engineered to withstand regular washdowns. Their materials and sealing options help protect internal components from water and contaminants during cleaning processes.
These bearings are commonly used in conveyors, mixers, fillers, slicers, packaging equipment, and other machinery found throughout food processing and beverage production facilities.
Food & beverage grade bearings are often lubricated with greases that meet applicable food industry requirements for incidental contact. This helps support compliance while maintaining bearing performance in demanding environments.
By using corrosion-resistant materials and appropriate lubricants, food & beverage grade bearings help reduce the risk of contamination and support sanitary equipment design in regulated processing environments.
